Only students who are regularly registered via univis can participate in the course. It is mandatory to attend the first unit on 11 March 2015. Students who miss the first unit will lose their place in the course and may be replaced by students from the waiting list.

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides students with an understanding of the role played by the European Union in minority issues. It discusses the rationale and instruments of EU action in the field of minority protection. This course provides students with an understanding of the protection of minorities in the European Union. It familiarizes students with definitions and types of minorities and theoretical concepts related to the protection of national, ethnic, and linguistic minorities. It also addresses legal concepts such as non-discrimination, group-specific rights, individual rights, and collective rights, and discusses the implementation and enforcement of such rights in the EU.

Assessment and permitted materials

The language of instruction is English. Students are expected to have a solid command of the English language in terms of reading, speaking and writing.

Attendance for this course is mandatory and will be taken at every class meeting (unit). Students are required to attend all units. University regulations allow for up to two unexcused absences during the semester. A medical note is required for any further absence. Absence due to job or work-related reasons will not be accepted. Accruing more than two absences without a medical note will negatively affect the final mark. Students who miss more than five units (regardless of reason) will fail the course.

Evaluation:
- Attendance and active participation in class discussions - 20%
- Individual assignments - 20%
- Group presentation - 30%
- Final test taking place during the last class - 30%

Plagiarism (presenting someone else's work as your own) is strictly FORBIDDEN. Plagiarism may result in failing the entire course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of the course is to deepen students' understanding of fundamental concepts related to minority protection in the EU. The course intends to develop students' analytical skills through critical engagement with arguments from the academic literature as well as their research, writing, and presentation skills.
