Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture deals with manifold functions of visuals in politics. Visuals are omnipresent in daily political business: they mark the field of the visible and showable, shape our ideas of current and historical political events, become assets of political events and lend them a symbolic dimension. On the basis of current visual examples of visual politics and its mediation (e.g. election campaigns, political photojournalism, strategic self-presentation of politicians, photos of war and conflict situations), structures, conventions, motifs and genres that are constitutive visual politics are discussed. The aim of the course is to introduce participants to visual phenomena and their significance for political processes. At the end of the semester, participants should be familiar with current cultural and social science theories of the visual and have increased visual competence in the analysis of visual phenomena of the political. Methods: Lectures and discussions of examples.
