Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Increased public visibility of Muslim women in numerous Middle Eastern countries has also increased scholarly interest in them. To numerous social scientists, muslim women's political engagement represents a curious aspect of what is called "political Islam". The matter becomes even more curious when Muslim women are witnessed to adopt ideologies mostly ascribed to the secular West.
Feminism as such has caused excitement among scholars due to the widespread perception of Islam and women's movement as mutually exclusive. Against this background, the course intends to reflect on Muslim women's relationship/attitude to/wards feminism in a non-European context by means of following questions: How can feminism be grasped in a non-European Muslim context? What are the socio-political roots of feminist aspirations among Muslim women? What implications does feminism possibly have for the prevailing gender roles within respective contexts?

Assessment and permitted materials

The performance of students will be assessed through (1) regular attendance, (2) active participation in class discussions, and (3) the quality of presentations and papers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of the course is at least twofold: On the one hand, it provides students with theoretical and methodic tools which enable a critical treatment of gender and religion/ideology as concepts of political science. On the other hand, students are expected to employ these tools to make sense of concrete cases.
