Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The political system change of 1989 is represented in public spaces, especially in two perspectives: first, historicized in commemorative events, exhibitions and historical works (last years' two-decades-anniversary); second, it still serves (especially in the states of the „system change” itself) political actors as a reference for the establishment and enforcement of political legitimacy. Two prospects which work out together.
In the seminar will these different forms of representation be presented and discussed on behalf of selected examples: the center of the discussion and analysis shall be focused upon the comparative analysis and reconstruction of case studies from different areas. On the one hand, investigated will be the interaction between political and historicizing forms of representation; on the other hand, it is supposed to establish contacts (during excursions in the region) with selected political scientist-colleagues from the region of the system change which will support comparing the different representations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Seminar grades by active participation, preparation and presentation of a topic proposal and seminar paper (group work is possible).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Objectives of the Seminar are:
- Developing an understanding of the processes of historicizing of political events and correlations on the example of Europe's postwar history of the political system contrasts
- An overview of different forms of representation of the system change of 1989 in Central Europe
- And a confrontation with the „refreshing” of the year 1989 in political forms of representation and disputes.

Examination topics

The concept of the Seminar is commited to a dialogue-principle: between the two lecturers; between different forms of representation - in the interplay between history, politics and art – and over the former system boundaries: the latter by means of excursions in to the region of the system change, and meeting with teachers and students of political science at selected Central European universities.
The comparison of different positions and representations on behalf of students' presentations
