Aims, contents and method of the course

Since the decade of the seventies, the states of Latin America and the Caribbean have made an effort to intensify their political and trading relations to the countries of the Asian Pacific area, especially with the bigger countries and the emerging “small tigers”, which are organized in the ASEAN.
The seminar deals with the paradigm shift in Latinamerica between in Latinamerica focusing on three key questions:

*) Comparative analysis of forms of integration with participation of latinamerican
States as:
”Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation“ (APEC)
“Pacific Economic Cooperation Council” (PECC)
”Trans-Pacific-Strategic Economic Partnership” (TPP)
“Foro de Cooperación América Latina-Asia del Este” (FOCOLAE)
“Alianza del pacífico”
“Diálogo Económico”
*) Competition or cooperation with alternative forms of integration:
„EU-ASEAN Summits“
„Asia-Europe Meeting” (ASEM)
„South East Asian Association for Regional Cooperation” (SAARC)
“Shanghai Cooperation”
“China-ASEAN Free Trade Area” (CAFTA)
*) Political economic relations of individual states of Latianamerica to AP-countries

Assessment and permitted materials

*) attendance
*) preparation of a written concept and presentation handout
*) interim and final oral reports on the chosen topic
*) written paper (20 p.)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Independent critical analysis of specific policy fields using appropriate theoretical approaches.

Examination topics
