Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

First, we will try to understand why several states in the Middle East lost or never attained the monopoly of violence and are thus confronted with nonstate actors on their territory sponsored by other states directly or indirectly. Second, we ask about the allegiances of these militias and analyze their internal structures. Third, we will get to the level of international law and the political interplay of international relations.

There will be reflections on the normative level - 'weak' versus 'strong' states f.e. as well as an overview of guerilla strategies always in regard with international legal principles and theories of international relations.
