Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course discusses the concept and the dynamics of Europeanization beyond the European Union. It takes its point of departure in attempts at discussing the EU as a foreign policy actor, which over the last decades have resulted in a huge number of different perceptions. It explores the actors and processes of policy-making in EU´s policies targeting non-member states to debate broad questions regarding the external impact of European integration. The Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region will be the case study used to apply the theories and the analytical tools of Political Science. Students will analyse the development of European-Mediterranean relations, with the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP), the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) as landmark agreements. Then, key challenges such as migration, security and power positioning in the MENA region will be critically discussed.
The course has a seminar format, with lectures alternating with presentations from the students and a final writing of a short essay. Students are required to actively participate in the class debate.

Assessment and permitted materials

The exam consists of three assignments:
1. Group presentation of the literature of a session (35%)
2. Individual presentation of an essay proposal (20%)
3. Written essay (max 5 pages) based on the proposal discussed during the individual presentation. The essay is due after the end of the course. (45%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Emphasis is placed on the degree to which the student’s performance lives up to the described aims and the degree to which students have a command of the following general skills:
Knowledge. The course aims at enabling students to obtain and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of relations between Europe and the Middle Eastern and North African region, of current changes in the Mediterranean region and related current and contemporary research discussions.
Abilities. The students should be able to demonstrate abilities in formulating, analysing and presenting knowledge from the course, taking their point of departure in the course material.
Competences. In short written form and through oral presentations, the students should be able to summarise complex theoretical issues and present their knowledge in an eloquent and understandable way.
Attendance is mandatory, and participation can tip the scale if the final evaluation stands between two grades. Missing more than 20% of the course without written explanation will result in the course failure.
All the assignments are compulsory.

Examination topics

Academic debate on the EU as a foreign policy actor
EU policies in the Mediterranean region
Key challenges in the MENA region (i.e.: the migration crisis, security and democracy promotion after the Arab uprisings).
