Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Content, aims and methodsThis seminar focuses on the complex interrelationship between politics, political culture and popular culture.Popular culture provides an important framework for political communication and action, not only in times of intense election campaigns. References to popular culture have become an everyday part of politics. This applies to the communication of political viewpoints and orientation patterns as well as to the presentation of political personalities and topics. These developments also pose new challenges for political science research, both in theoretical and methodological terms. The course is designed as a research seminar.1) At the beginning, selected cultural theories will be discussed on the basis of compulsory literature and linked with concepts of political culture research and corresponding analytical approaches from political science, media studies, cultural studies and visual studies.2) Students then work on case studies (preferably in small groups), which they can choose themselves or select from a list of suggestions. The research work is supervised by the course instructor.3) The preliminary results are presented and discussed in plenary towards the end of the semester and form the basis for the written seminar paper.
