Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Over the last decade, a growing number of populist parties have been electorally successful. Examples such as Donald Trump’s electoral victory in the US-election in November 2016 or the electoral success of Front National in France, of the FPÖ in Austria or Syriza in Greece show that populist parties are on the rise also all over Europe. To capture these processes better, in this seminar, we will analyze the term populism, explore who is voting for populist parties and why, and look into the effect of news media on populist attitudes.
The overall goal of the seminar is to familiarize students with theories and recent research on populism. By reading the various texts on populism student will also get acquainted with empirical research methods in political science.
