The last slot (25.6.2019) will be replaced by the attendance of two IPW Lectures. The first takes place on Friday 10.5.2019 at 13.15 the second on Tuesday 4.6.2019 at 17.00.

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
- Active participation and regular attendance are prerequisite. The participants can be absent for maximum 2 sessions.- Group tasks:
o 3-5-page research proposal and presentation of this research proposal in class (20’ minutes per group)
o Write an academic paper of 30-40 pages excluding literature and annexes (mandatory: 1.5 pt spacing and font 11 Times New Roman)- Individual tasks:
o Give written and oral feedback to 3 research proposals from other groups
o Search 4 relevant academic texts (for each text summary of 500 words) and develop ideas about 2 sources of empirical data (for each data source description of 250 words)

For a positive completion of the research practice, all elements must be awarded a sufficient grade (at least 4).Grade composition:

- New technologies may reduce the availability of jobs in specific occupations and therefore increase unemployment and underemployment. For instance, robots, including self-driving cars might be soon replacing humans in activities such as taxi drivers, and bus chauffeurs.
- New technologies may change the nature of jobs and the required qualifications.
- Globalisation, robotisation and automation have been creating increasingly non-standard and oftentimes precarious employment, such as on-call work (Deliveroo, etc.), involuntary part-time, temporary work arrangements and new forms of self-employment and entrepreneurships with lacking social insurance coverage (platforms).
These phenomena generate new social needs (e.g. for re-training, social insurance, wage compensation) that are insufficiently addressed by the current welfare and labour market policies.
Accordingly, the relevant question is what can and does social and labour market policy do to address these new challenges and prevent increasing inequality?Possible concerned policy areas:
- Active labour market policies that address skill shortage and retrain workers with obsolete skills.
- Labour market regulation that tries to ameliorate the working standards of precarious employment
- Redistributive measure that address increasing inequality (basic income, progressive taxes, etc.) and/or lacking welfare state benefits (e.g. due to self-employment without social insurance)
