In order to pass the seminar, students are expected to complete the following tasks:
1. Active participation in class
2. Prepare reading responses on the mandatory literature and act as discussion lead
3. Hand in short essays / reflections on research exercises
4. Prepare a final research project
5. Provide peer feedback to one colleague on their final project

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
- Prior knowledge on qualitative (comparative) research and/or the topic of "Inequality in Health and Society" is not required to successfully complete the class.- Students should be able to read and comprehend interdisciplinary texts and other materials, such as videos and podcast, in English (reading strategies will be discussed in class).- Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and group exercises and work together with their colleagues to complete tasks.- Students are not required to speak English perfectly in order to successfully complete the class, but should be willing to read, write, and speak in English. We will discuss strategies to do so competently in case English is not your first language.

This course is dedicated to enhancing your knowledge of and familiarity with (comparative) qualitative methods - interviews & focus groups, participant observations, and digital ethnography - for use in your own research projects. Looking at these methods from a practical perspective, we will also dedicate time to the topics of research ethics, the purpose of research questions, and data analysis. Doing so, we will focus specifically on researching topics in the area of *Inequality in Health and Society*. Your research projects will deal with aspects within this general topic of your own choosing and analyze them from a political science / social science perspective.OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn to:
- formulate their own research interests and questions,
- create a qualitative research design suitable for their research questions,
- conduct every stage of research with awareness of ethical principles and guidelines for qualitative social science research projects,
- demonstrate knowledge of the main approaches of collecting and analyzing qualitative data, and
- design and conduct a research project based on qualitative, social science methods, both independently and in a research group.METHODS:
The format of the class will involve practical exercises to prepare you for research, discussions of literature and other topics surrounding data collection and analysis in class, as well as conducting your own (small) research project.ATTENDANCE:
Attendance in all four sessions is mandatory due to University of Vienna regulations for "prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltungen."
