Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar deals with the EU as an international actor. It aims at exploring the question what kind of actor the EU is on the global scale and how it acts at the regional level. What does global governance actually mean? How is it implemented? How are the decision-making processes within the EU? What guides EU foreign policy making? And how does the EU interact with others in the world?
The seminar strongly builds on presentations, active participation in debates, readings and the final thesis.
Each participant is required to prepare a presentation. Presentations are made in form of an academic panel. Each panel has a moderator. Presentations are 5-7 min. max. Presenters are encouraged to develop a research question and to share it with the class. Presenters are asked to prepare a handout. Handouts should be circulated in class and send to the convenor beforehand. All participants must read the texts provided on moodle and to participate in the debates.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the discussions is strongly encouraged. Participation in the debates constitutes a key part of the final mark. The seminar-thesis is a central part of the seminar. It should not exceed 15 pages. Important for the evaluation of the thesis is whether it is guided by a research question and what kind of sources are used and how the author has referred to them.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants should not miss more than three units. Further, the presentation and the final thesis are minimum requirements
