Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will focus on the influence of the European Union (EU) in the world, its role as a global player and international power in the making.
It will provide an inter-disciplinary understanding of EU’s role within the global governance by drawing on a range of approaches in the social sciences and the humanities. Thus, the global actorness of the EU will be analysed by asking questions such as what the EU does, how it does it, why it does it, and where it succeeds or fails in a vast range of areas. We will look at the political, social, economic and security relations of EU with the rest of the world from historical and contemporary standpoints. Special focus will be given to EU's relationship with international organisations such as UN, NATO, etc., as well as old and emerging powers. The EU's contributions to regional and global governance will be highlighted by looking at the EU's role as a multinational and regional political system, its external policies including trade, migration, enlargement and neighbourhood policy, etc.
In this sense the course aims at assessing the international significance of the European integration, the impact that adjustments in the international arena have on the EU itself as well as the developing role of the EU within a new and changing world order.
