Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Development of quantitative research designs, formulation of research questions, development of the theoretical and methodological embedding of the research questions, case selection, working with secondary data, analysis methods in Stata with a focus on linear and logistic regression models.
The course is designed to enable students to formulate independent research questions and develop a suitable research design. For this purpose, all essential steps in the development of a research design will be discussed: Formulation of a research question, literature review, theory, hypothesis definition and testing, concept definitions and operationalisation, case selection and empirical testing. Among others, we will discuss the following questions: How do I find a research question? How do I formulate a research question? What elements should a quantitative research design contain? How can a research question be justified in a theoretically appropriate way?

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance (maximum 2 missed units), discussion/cooperation/quizzes, homework in the practical part, seminar paper (consisting of a theoretical and a practical part).

The requirements in detail are clarified in the first unit.

The final paper is checked for scientific misconduct using the plagiarism software "Turnitin".

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Discussion, oral participation & quiz: 20%
Practical homework: 20%
Seminar paper, theoretical part: 30%
Seminar paper, practical part: 30%

In order to receive a positive grade, the positive evaluation of all scheduled partial assignments is required.

Examination topics

Participants will be assessed on their ability to formulate research questions and a research design to address them as well as their competence on core elements of quantitative, empirical research.

Reading list

Will be announced in the first session.
