Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction in relevant fields of national and European law of the mass media, focusing on the protection of fundamental human rights (freedom of expression and the media; personality rights), regulation of audiovisual media services (esp audio broadcasting and television), structure and functions of the regulatory authorities.
Assessment and permitted materials
active participation in the discussions, literature and tasks to prepare for each lesson; written test (one run-up, which only will be counted if there is a positive result and one written final exam)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students should be competent to assign practical legal questions to the relevant fields of law and be able to handle instruments of law (eg applications for the admission to private radio broadcasting; remedies against administrative and court decisions; levels of review). Knowing the content and case law of the fundamental human right of freedom of expression.
Examination topics
Interactive lectures, discussing practical cases from media coverage and advertising (eg asessing broadcast-content as regards the issue of objective reporting; infringments of advertising rules); personal research of students on the legal background of media policy topics.
