Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Gender Mainstreaming (GM) skills and knowledge offer preferential employment opportunities for students wishing to work at future-proof media and communication outlets. VO GENDMAI will situate the concept of GM in the field of media policy studies and practices. It will focus on (a) introducing the concept of gender mainstreaming as a general approach in policy-making and specifically (b) in the field of media and communication (organizational, content/media output and advocacy). The aim of the course is to provide students with understanding on what ‘mainstreaming a gender perspective’ in policy processes actually entail including the planning, gender analysis and gender impact assessment within a broader context. Distinguished experts at cornerstone organizations (Stadt Wien, Office of the OSCE Representative on Media Freedom, and ORF) will be giving guest lectures on GM praxis. With regards to media and communication, the course will also highlight the impact of gendered production of media content; the status of women in newsrooms and their professional career opportunities, including equal pay perspectives, and the role of sexual harassment especially within the online context on journalists. The course will provide insights as well as best case examples on how mainstreaming a gender perspective in policy(-making) processes is implemented. The classes will be bilingual (English and German).
