Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we shall do two things. First, we shall review the basic assumptions and strategies of ethnographic research: theoretical traditions, guiding principles, research design, and analytic approaches. I shall emphasise the importance of 'traditional' fieldwork in sociological inquiry. Secondly, using a set of data that I shall provide, we shall construct a small ethnography, from the 'first day in the field' to a small ethnographic report: this will be done in small groups.
