Images are an essential part of social worlds that need to be explored sociologically. This exercise is aimed at students who want to get to know the potential of visual data material and photographs. We deal with topics from the field of visual sociology on the basis of qualitative and interpretative methods. The focus is on visual constructions and representations of cultural diversity in different social contexts and settings.
Based on a general introduction to the principles of qualitative research and the methods of visual survey and evaluation (including photo interviews, photo surveys, photo voice, segment analysis, film and video analysis, figurative hermeneutics), the focus is on qualitative interpretation techniques and their practical application. We work with the research paradigm of grounded theory in a process-oriented manner and in alternating research phases. After a concrete definition of the topic, a first field phase takes place. The materials collected in the process are analyzed afterwards, followed by a further survey phase with subsequent analysis. This circular process is repeated several times depending on the course of the project. The interpretation sessions take place in groups and to a large extent during the seminar units. The course instructor will provide exemplary visual material to support the students in understanding the evaluation strategies of visual materials. Students can also pursue their own research interests. Objectives:
The aim is to enable students to use visual data in a qualitative research project both as basic material and as supplementary material or documentation material in a social science visual analysis.
