Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:
Participation is considered a megatrend in late modern societies and a basic principle of health promotion. "Participation and Health" as the subject area of the course addresses the variety of participation possibilities of patient collectives in the health system: Various groups are involved to a very different extent for various (often hidden) reasons, which leads to different experiences and results.

In order to introduce students to this complex subject area, the course is divided into three phases.

In the first phase "Introduction, theories and models" social connections to the emerging participation efforts are established and the relationship between participation and health is discussed. The students work on on the basis of key publications, criteria against which participation processes can be planned and critically evaluated.
In the second phase "strategy development", the focus will be on collective patient participation by self-help organisations in Austria and it will be shown how self-help organisations can currently contribute to health policy decision-making processes. The prerequisites for action under which self-help organisations participate will also be examined. The students apply the knowledge they have acquired and reflect on Austrian participation practice by means of selected participation models and practical issues.
In the third phase, "participatory health research", the students develop the basics in order to be able to plan their own research projects.

Aims:
The course introduces the social science analysis of current participation efforts in health-related decision-making processes and illustrates them by means of the Austrian practice of collective patient participation.

The students will get to know participation as a basic principle of health promotion. They acquire knowledge of selected models for the analysis of participation processes and can apply them after completing the course and name their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, students are sensitized to the challenges of using models to analyze complex processes and the challenges of implementing participatory processes.

Methods:
Input from the course instructor, group work, reading and discussion

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation (discussions and group work), group presentation and seminar work. The seminar paper is to be written on a selected topic (a theoretical approach or a concrete implementation example of participation in health care or health research). If a group seminar paper is written, there is also the possibility of individually assigning individual parts. The length of an individual work should be at least 12 pages (group work should be correspondingly longer).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presence in at least 80% of the units is a prerequisite for a positive conclusion.
The grading is made up of the following partial performances:
- Active participation during the course units (e.g. presentation of results of group work) (20%)
- Giving a (group) presentation within the course (20 %)
- Seminar paper for in-depth discussion of a topic dealt with in the seminar according to the specifications of the course instructor (at least 12 text pages) (40%)
For a positive grade, all partial tasks must be performed.
