Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Ethnography is not a method of interpretative sociology. It is rather a way of conducting research which puts the relevancies of the field first. In doing so, ethnographers themselves become the most important and most sensitive instrument for choosing adequate methods. Therefore, the aim is not to find out a “truth” of their field, but rather to explore and investigate the alterity or alieniness of today’s multioptional societies. Both, the alterity as well as the alieniness may best be understood by observing or participating in the meaningful worlds of cultural phenomena which range from bodybuilding to high-energy physics.
Based on this theoretical introduction students will create their own empirical "mini-projects" in order to study the application of different ethnographic research tools. These projects will be the main target of the following two meetings (Nov and Dec 2010) as they provide us with the opportunity for a deeper discussion of ethnographic research strategies and for methodological reflection. In the last meeting (Jan 2011) results of the „mini-projects“ are presented.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment is split threefold and consists of individual and group activities. Students have to submit abstracts or statements before every session. In addition, students have to organize, carry out and modify a research design in groups. Furthermore, the assessment consists of a term paper which documents the modification of the research design as well as the interpretation of data. The term paper has to be submitted individually.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance is compulsory. The minimal requirement of the course is to submit all abstracts or statements, to organize, conduct and modify a research design as well as to submit a term paper.
The requirements are assessed as:
Abstracts / Statements: 25%
Research design: 25%
Term paper: 50%

Examination topics

The course aims to introduce students to the general theoretical and methodological foundations of ethnographic research on the basis of texts. Additionally, the development of a research designs is supported by examples and material analysis from recent ethnographic studies.
