Aims, contents and method of the course

The impact of methodological questions and choices in social reporting on the situation of women shall be critically discussed. The seminar gives an introduction to the European and national system of social indicators with focus on poverty, income, labour market, health and family and household structure within the framework of current objectives and measures of social policy in Austria and the European Union.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

There is still a lack of gender relevant aspects in the process of designing social indicators. Participants shall develop a deeper understanding for the practice and policy relevance of social reporting. Current reporting and statistical practice will be critically discussed and shall enable participants to interprete and develop adequate indicators to measure equality between men and women.

Examination topics

Es werden Sozialberichte in der Europäischen Union und in Österreich vorgestellt und in Hinblick auf die soziale Lage von Frauen kritisch diskutiert. Die verwendeten Indikatoren und Datengrundlagen werden auf Validität, Relevanz und Vollständigkeit für eine "gendersensible" Statistik, sowie auf zugrunde liegende Problemlagen und Ziele geprüft und von den TeilnehmerInnen in Referaten beispielhaft diskutiert. Empirisch werden die Studierenden angeleitet, selbstständig Indikatoren aus bestehenden Statistiken zu entwickeln, sowie Lücken und Datenmängel zu identifizieren. Letztendlich soll die Übung an eine verantwortungsvolle Anwendung von Zahlen heranführen, die über die passive Rezeption von frauenrelevanten Statistiken hinausgeht.
