Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the late 1970s, American sociologist Arlie Hochschild wrote The Managed Heart, a book that was to become key in sociological debates regarding the kind of post-fordist work that draws on emotional and affective skills, especially in the service sector. Hochschild was convinced of the need to ask concrete questions about the activities of employees and expectations of employers to find out what role emotions play in the labour process. In her view, the sort of work that really becomes part of a specific job is shaped by expectations ‘on the spot’. Since Hochschild presented her study on flight attendants, there have been a series of theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of emotional and affective work. In this seminar, students will examine international interdisciplinary debates and discuss theoretical approaches while learning about methods for examining contemporary forms of emotional and affective labour in the digital age. Readings will be in English and German.
