Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The research practice "Images in material environments" is dedicated to the understanding of nature and society and their connections in everyday social contexts and practices.
The research focuses on everyday contexts, contradictions and conflicting goals in the environmentally relevant actions of individuals and their anchoring in the collective. Representations in images of (consumer) society are of particular importance:
Advertising media and advertising images as representatives of economic embedding are confronted with individual values in everyday environmental behaviour. We take up environmentally specific questions concerning sustainable mobility and climate change, (plastic-free) nutrition / ecological footprint, lifestyle and environmental movements and embed these questions into research practice using visual and qualitative survey methods. We work on environmental sociological questions using methods of visual sociology such as photo survey, segment analysis, figurative hermeneutics or film and video analysis. After the research design has been conceived, the topic has been defined and a research question has been developed, the focus is on data collection and the creation of a corpus of images as well as the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of the visual and text-based data.
