Aims, contents and method of the course
This course offers an introduction to the basic techniques of cohort analysis. Participants gain an overview of available national and international data sources that can be used study social change along cohort lines. Using the statistical software R, the key concepts and measures of cohort analysis will be derived and explained. The course does not require pre-existing knowledge of R. A basic introduction to the software will be given at the beginning of the course. After completing this course, students should be able to conduct simple analyses related to questions around social change using suitable data.
Assessment and permitted materials
- Depending on the number of participants, a single or group presentation about one specific course area (to be identified in class). Relevant literature will be provided.- Submission of a written essay on a different course topic than the presentation.- Submission of R code and the corresponding data used for a simple cohort analysis. The topic will be chosen by the student and the course instructor in class.- Classroom participation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
- Participation is obligatory. Students may miss at most one class.- Grades will be based on the three exercises (presentation, essay, R code).- All three exercises must be completed.
