Course Assessment
To pass the seminar, students taking this course as their first Coping-Seminar are expected to:
Write an exposé for your master thesis, along the guidelines handed out and discussed in grant writing and project management; Length: 10-12 pages, to be handed in 10 days before your presentation slot
Present your exposé in class (10-15 min).To pass the seminar, students taking this course as their second Coping-Seminar are expected to:
Write a draft chapter or a working document for your master thesis. Choose a chapter for which you think feedback will be helpful, or a document that discusses elements of your research for which you need help turning them into (a) chapter(s) (e.g. different strands of literature, methodological reflections, an overview of empirical findings you need to order). Hand in 10 days before your presentation slot.
Present the chapter/document in class and position it in the thesis as a whole (10-15 min).To pass the seminar, all students are expected to:
In addition to the main text, students are asked to highlight one challenge they are facing in their current work, and to write a short text describing the challenge (1-2 pages). Challenges can be for example the development of instruments for empirical work (e.g. a questionnaire), the analysis of a specific piece of data, the use of a specific concept in relation to the student’s work, etc.. Provide the necessary supplementary material (e.g. a text on the concept you would like to discuss, a draft of your questionnaire, a mindmap of the literature in your state of the art….). Send this along with your main text 10 days before your presentation slot.
Comment on the exposé/chapter and presentation of a colleague (be critical but constructive). Be precise and concise (max. 5 min).
Read all exposés, draft chapters or working documents for your colleagues’ units.
Productively engage in the discussions in class.
Adhere to the general standards of good academic practice.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading Scheme
The grading scheme is based on a total of 100 points. These points will be awarded in relation to students’ performance in meeting the course learning aims in the different obligatory tasks.
Timely delivery of all asssignments will be reflected in the final grade.
The maximum number of points to be acquired for each task is:Exposé/draft chapter/working

Interim product: 20 points, assessed individually
Comment: 10 points, assessed individually
In-class participation: 30 points, assessed individuallyMinimum requirements
A minimum of 50 points is necessary to successfully complete the course. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic work may result in a deduction of points.Grades

All written work must be uploaded in time on Moodle. All documents must be in .pdf format, page numbered, in A4 format and contain the name of the student as well as the description of the assignment. Page numbers of assignments are based on 11 point font, 1 1/2 line spacing.Attendance
Presence and participation is compulsory. Absences of four hours at maximum are tolerated, provided that the lecturer is informed about the absence. Absences of up to eight hours in total may be compensated by either a deduction of grading points or/and extra work agreed with the lecturer. Whether compensation is possible is
decided by the lecturer.
Absences of more than eight hours in total cannot be compensated. In this case, or if the lecturer does not allow a student to compensate absences of more than four hours, the course cannot be completed and is graded as a ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfil the attendance requirements on the student’s side (e.g. a longer illness).
In such a case, the student may be deregistered from
the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary.
Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.Important Grading Information
If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course.
In that case, the course will be graded as ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness).
In such a case, the student may be deregistered from the course without grading.

In particular, students are asked to address problems and challenges they are facing at the current stage of their work, and to share and discuss them in class.The main didactic method used will be student presentations of written work, followed by comments and discussion by student colleagues and the seminar teacher. The precise format of the single units depends on the number of students in class and will be announced and discussed in the first course unit.
If time allows, course units can also be dedicated to reflecting specific challenges of the research and writing process, instead of student presentations.Student work
Develop a work plan for your thesis project for this term, discuss it with your supervisor, and hand it in on Moodle until October 23 rd 2016 .As part of this work plan, together with your supervisor, decide on an i nterim product/draft chapter for your thesis which should be completed by the end of the term (e.g. a discussion paper of a specific
area of literature relevant for your state of the art, an analysis of the context of your case, a reflection on the methods you will use, a revision of the chapter presented in class).The product should be an 812 page paper to be handed in by February 12t h 2017. Tell me which product you will deliver as part of the work plan. If student and supervisor decide over the course of the
semester that a different interim product would make more sense this can of course be changed.
