Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to support students in writing a proposal for their master's thesis. It is aimed at students who already have clear ideas about the topic of their master's thesis as well as those who are at an earlier stage. It is recommended, however, that the methods modules (quantitative and qualitative) and the research specialisation have already been taken.
The basics of the preparation of the proposal will be worked on: Narrowing and formulating the research question, relationship between theory and empirical research, literature research, general advice regarding research methods. Problems in the preparation of a proposal are dealt with on the basis of concrete questions arising from research practice. Students will have the opportunity to present and discuss their exposés or their research projects for the master thesis. Ideally, a full proposal should be ready at the end of the semester.

Assessment and permitted materials

The aim is to develop a research project taking into account feedback from peers and from the seminar tutor. Relevant for assessment are the presentation of the research project, the preparation of a preliminary research question, as well as the active participation in feedback rounds in large and in small groups.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive evaluation is active participation in the sessions (compulsory attendance) along with the following elements:
(a) development and presentation of a research proposal (25%)
b) Preparation of a preliminary synopsis (25%)
c) Preparation of a final synopsis (25%)
d) Participation in peer feedback rounds (25%)
Minimum requirement for passing grade is completion of all assignments as specified.

Examination topics

Relevant and recommended literature will be announced in the first unit.
