Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar approaches medical classifications as social, scientific and technological phenomena. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies, we will engage with the medical field by addressing the following questions: How do classifications contribute to the making of bodies and minds in medicine? How do medical terminological standards participate in gendering, explaining and treating health issues? What are the effects of classification work? How, and what, do categories differentiate? Further we will explore the ambiguities of medical classifications and draw our attention on processes of claiming, changing, undoing or replacing them. Special emphasis will be placed on selected diagnostic categories and on the category >chronically mentally ill<.
