Aims, contents and method of the course

English speaking ERASMUS or MA-CREOLE/anthropology students find all the necessary information via Moodle (if you have not registered for the Moodle course, just do the self-enrolment!):

Assessment and permitted materials

1) written exam (five open questions): Students read and prepare all chapters of
Small Places, Large Issues. An Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology by
Thomas H. Eriksen (2015 [2010]). Please make sure that you use the 3rd or 4th edition of the book.
AND
2) a 6.000 words paper on one of the following topics, based on adequate anthropological literature and references - handed in as a hard copy at the day of the written exam:

1. Major theoretical positions in social and cultural anthropology of the 20th century
2. Religion and/or ritual in the context of social and cultural anthropology
3. Material culture and/or media in the context of social and cultural anthropology
4. Anthropological studies on migration and/or globalization

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Erasmus and Master's students who are not fluent in German don't have to take the German multiple-choice-test at the end of the course. They are allowed to take a written exam in English (this counts for 60% of the final grading) AND write a paper in English of 6.000 words (40% of final grading).

For successfully finishing the course, both – the exam and the paper – have to be graded positively. If the exam is negative and the paper positive, students do not have to write the paper again (the grading for the paper remains), but they have to repeat the written exam. Students are legally allowed to repeat this written exam three times (four attempts); the forth examination is organized by an external commission. If the paper is negative, students have to re-submit a revised version of the text.
