Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Course content:

In this VO+EU we deal with power relations in the European higher education sector and look at how the opening of universities contributes to more diversity but still reproduces mechanisms of exclusion. Today's universities have a larger and more diverse student body and are therefore also confronted with new forms of political engagement by students dealing with issues such as racism, sexism and transphobia. These struggles involve conflicts between generations but also between worldviews and systems of thought. They aim to question and expand certain forms of knowledge production. These issues are addressed here and analyzed from an intersectional perspective. On the one hand, the aim is to look at the causes and processes of exclusion at the university, as well as to analyze the actors and actions which contribute to it. We will look at critical approaches to diversity strategies as well as to decolonizing universities using various literature and learning materials (MOOCs).

Aims and methods

The aim of the VO+EU is to give students the opportunity to critically examine the university learning space and to critically question exclusions and forms of different knowledge production that take place at the university. The course is based on the findings of the Erasmus+ project Helci (Higher Education Learning Community for Inclusion) in which 4 MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) were created through the analysis of focus groups, which deal with these topics.

Methodologically, the VO+EU is based on three elements:

1) The independent self-study of 2 of the 4 MOOCs, the literature and the joint reflection on the knowledge read, seen and heard in the group setting.
2) Joint analysis of the focus group data in small groups as part of a simulation game on diversity at the university.
3) The evaluation of the MOOCs in one reflection essays in order to develop a systematic-critical view of learning materials that have been created as part of a university research project.

Assessment and permitted materials
