Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar focuses on fieldwork and ethnographic methods. Different qualitative methods are introduced and discussed in class and acquired through practical exercises in and outside the classroom. The focus lies on participant observation, different interview methods, qualitative analysis and writing.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in the seminar is essential: students are expected to attend the seminar, to read the compulsory literature, to accomplish small written exercises at home and to actively engage in the seminar’s discussion. Moreover, students are expected to work in groups on a small research project by conducting participant observation, keeping a field diary and interviewing informants while in the field. Moreover, students present their research findings to the other seminar participants and write a research report based on their research findings.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Overview of key methods for ethnographic research and first practical experiences with collecting, documenting and interpreting data. Ethical questions (including the role of the researcher in the field) take central part in the discussion of the different methods.
Examination topics
Discussion in class will be based on selected readings and on the input provided by the lecturer. For the practical exercises, students will work in small groups, carrying out a small research project. Every team presents its findings to the other seminar participants and writes a research report based on preliminary findings. The students gain 10 ECTS when successfully completing the seminar. The workload for this seminar is 250 hours, which includes seminar attendance, the time spend in the field and the time spend to analyze and write up the research findings.
Reading list
A reading list including compulsory and further reading will be distributed in the first seminar session.
