The course deals with one of the most important socio-politically and religious-culturally significant features of the oceanic region (Pacific islands, South Seas). Especially in Melanesia, numerous revitalization movements have gained great importance since the beginning of the 20th century as a reaction to colonialism and contact with the Europeans. A special form are the cargo cults, which are important for the field of ethnology and whose explanatory elements mix myths and reality. In the course, the most important cults are presented on the basis of exemplary cases and the scientific discussions based on them. The aim is to gain a comprehensive overview of these religious-political-cult customs and phenomena and to link them with other forms of indigenous resistance practices.
