Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Based on the presentation of the specific framework conditions, the cultural characteristics of the three large regions of Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia are examined from an ethnological/anthropological perspective. The selection of individual exemplary features is intended to provide more direct access to the cultural specifics of the societies there. Historical developments (settlement history, colonialism, christian mission) are brought into interrelation with recent problems. Presentation of the evidence of material and spiritual culture against the background of re-traditionalisation, search for identity and globalisation. Illumination of current social and political developments.
Overview and insight into the cultures of the insular Pacific region (Pacific Islands/Oceania). Interconnected and thematically overlapping interdisciplinary overall survey of a world region with its cultural, ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity. Presentation of ethnological peculiarities on the basis of selected examples.
