Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course provides an introduction to political science from an international development perspective. Apart from an introduction to basic concepts in political science, the course discusses key issues in debates on politics in non-western countries and global politics more generally within comparative politics, international relations, sociology of power and political systems analysis. Specifically, the course presents debates on democracy, global governance, political economy, welfare state/social policies and social movements. The course is rounded up by a number of case studies of specific policy fields, including global environmental policies/ politics; conflict, state collapse and reconstruction,; population policies and reproductive politicies, and migration.
Assessment and permitted materials
Combination of Multiple Choice Test and open questions.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will be introduced to a political science perspective on global politics and politics in the South. The main aim is to offer students a basic understanding of different theoretical perspectives on politics. Excellent (passive) German language knowledge (ability to read, ability to follow the individual lectures) is required.

Content of lectures (ppts of individual lecture dates will be made availabe via moodle), selected literature (see below). Note that lecture content may differ from respective chapters in the "Politik und Peripherie" textbook. Also, ppts may not provide a full summary of individual lecture.
