The seminar will introduce discussions on how research classifies migrant entrepreneurship between economic marginality and growth markets, between precariousness and potential. Important contributions, which have had a lasting impact on the research field, will be presented: from concepts of opportunity structures, social and multiple embedding, to agency, feminist criticism of classical research and socio-spatial analysis. The seminar will also discuss methodological foundations and innovations in research on migration, incorporation, and migrant economies, which open the research field for intersectional analyzes of power relations and inequalities. The course focuses on research approaches, which can grasp and analyze social interactions and relationships and can trace social construction of categories in research, public and by the entrepreneurs themselves. The students learn different theoretical perspectives on migration and integration within the field of migrant economies and will be able to point out differences and continuities within the field, as well as major theoretical and conceptual innovations. Bason on the main literature within the field, the students will learn how research interest, theory, methodology and methods align in social science research. Students will learn to read, excerpt, discuss and critically reflect academic papers, work in groups and individually on assigned topics, including input to the class, and find own approaches to the field. The course is based on input by the lecturer, in-class presentations and homework by students, and a seminar paper.
