Aims, contents and method of the course
This course will use different approaches: Next to inputs by the lecturers, collective reading and discussion of key texts and other materials (e.g. videos) in class, students will be required to prepare short presentations on specific topics.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students are requested to present a paper (including a handout of 1 -2 page) and to actively participate in the course (e.g. reading assignments and discuss them in class).
At the end of the course a written paper of 5000 words (without bibliography) in English or German had to be submitted. (final deadline for paper submission will be July 11 th 2014

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course will focus on the collaboration of social scientists in general and anthropologists in particular with the military, security and intelligence organizations. Covering the period from colonial empires to the current global war on terror the use of anthropological expertise (embedded anthropologists in the US army´s Humain Terrain System in Iraq and Afghanistan) will be studied. In addition, critical stances on 'militarizing anthropology' by individual anthropologists (e.g. Price, Gonzales) + anthropological associations (AAA, Network of Concerned Anthropologists) will be dealt with.
