Aims, contents and method of the course

This course examines the major Latin American contributions to Social Sciences scrutinizing the following terms, concepts and theoretical outlooks: Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Freire), Internal Colonialism (Gonzalez Casnova), Ethnodevelopment (Stavenhagen), Center-Periphery (Prebisch, Galeano), Dependencia (Cardoso/Falletto and others), Liberation Theology (Gutierrez), Liberation Philosophy (Zea, Dussel), Coloniality (Quijano), Hybridity (Canclini) and Critical Postcolonialism (Rivera Cusicanqui).

Learning Outcomes

• A critical understanding of the main contributions of Latin American Social Sciences.
• Evaluation of Latin American intellectual efforts to integrate indigenous knowledge production into (Northern) social science mainstream.
• Understanding the criticism of traditional approaches of social sciences within Latin American scholarship.

All texts will be provided as pdf files. If possible, students are encouraged to read the texts in their original language (Spanish, Portuguese).

Final essay (5-6 Pages) 40 Points

Grading Criteria:

Attendance & Participation in the discussion of the texts 10 Points
Oral presentation of the course texts 30 Points
Review Essay (min. 2800 words) 60 Points

Grading Scale:
1 (sehr gut) 100-89 points
2 (gut)  88-76 points
3 (befriedigend)  75-63 Punkte
4 (genügend)  62-50 points
5 (nicht genügend)  49-0 points
