Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar aims to examine the concept of inclusion in the development policy debate, particularly in the areas of conflict prevention and peacebuilding. In the mid-2000s, inclusion began to supplement and replace the term sustainability. The argument of inclusion is the assumption that processes of social exclusion on different levels are the central cause of development deficits and armed conflict.
The reasons for inclusion’s popularity have not yet been adequately discussed scientifically. In conflict prevention, the impact of inclusion on strategies and programming is mixed. A thorough examination of the term inclusion is, thus, essential for development research and practice. The seminar offered will lead this discussion following up on recent publications such as the joint report by the World Bank and the UN on conflict prevention, 'Pathways for Peace'.

The seminar is divided into three sections:
1 Introduction to the discussion about inclusive development and inclusive peace with the discussion of the key concepts (such as ‘inclusive political settlements’);
2 Investigation of inclusion strategies in concrete peace processes (Colombia, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Nepal, the Philippines, Yemen) using primary materials;
3 Critical assessment of the inclusion debate.

50% final seminar paper
30% group presentation (+ handout/ppt slides)
20% active participation / preparation tutoring
Maximum of two absences

Examination topics

Seminar paper on one of the three key themes of the seminar. The research question needs to be approved by the seminar convener.
