Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
However, once the terms "sex" and "gender" have largely found their way into a critical public discourse, a strict distinction between the two terms poses problems. In this context a distinction between "sex" as the biological sex and "gender" as the social sex is often made, whereby deconstructivist research approaches have shown that the supposedly "biological", "natural" sex is also socially produced (cf. Butler 1997). The course takes this as an opportunity to examine the conceptual fields of "sex" and "gender" in detail through an introduction to Judith Butler's thinking. We will read and discuss selected chapters from Judith Butler's following three publications together: Gender Trouble (german 1991); Bodies that Matter (german 1997); and Die Macht der Geschlechternormen (2009), in order to precisely elaborate Butler's thesis on the performativity of gender. On the other hand, the examination of Judith Butler's thinking provides access to fundamental questions of gender studies, such as how concepts of the body regulate and how deregulation and resistance to discourses is nevertheless possible as a performative event. At the same time, the texts to be discussed can provide an introduction to the essential concepts and terminologies of gender studies.
Assessment and permitted materials
Seminar paper of approx. 15 pages on a text and/or topic discussed in the course with detailed elaboration of an independent approach.
Attendance, active participation in shared discussions, preparation of literature, written thesis.
Attendance, active participation in shared discussions, preparation of literature, written thesis.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The seminar is conducted in the form of a weekly guided reading. The texts to be discussed in the seminar will be made available to the students via the e-learning platform and they will be encouraged to engage in a critical theoretical exchange both among themselves and in relation to the texts, supported by introductory inputs from the course instructor at the beginning of each unit as well as moderated discussions. Students will be asked to prepare central questions to the text for each unit, which will be used as guides for joint discussions.
