Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

African countries are belonging to the world’s most unequal societies. Social disparities and social and political discontentment provoke protests which culminated in striking miners but also in notorious demonstrations of the service delivery sector in several slums/townships, claims for human rights or for free education.
The seminar offers an introduction to different concepts of social movement research such as Collective Behaviour, Ressource Mobilization, Political Opportunity Structures, Collective Identity or Framing theory and discusses the theoretical approaches against the backdrop of selected protests in Africa.
