Continuous assessment of course work

This course is devoted to anthropological knowledge production about Russia by western Europeans and North Americans. While the historic overview begins in the late Middle Ages, when Europe started to show political interest in Muscovy, the center of attention is on the anthropological representation of Soviet and post-Soviet realities.

Aims, contents and method of the course

- From the Middle Ages through the 17th century: Diplomats
- The 18th Century: Naturalists
- The 19th Century: Agronomists and Philosophers
- The 20th Century: Between Propaganda and Neglect
- The Post-Soviet Years: An Eldorado for Western Anthropologists?

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Written term paper 60%
2. Oral presentation of an article and/or discussion leadership 10%
3. Critical book review 20%
4. Participation 10%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Gaining a better understanding for the geographic/political/cultural space of "Russia"
- Providing an overview over the historic relations between Russia and Europe (which includes aspects of the history of science)
- Discuss the theoretical and conceptual aspects of representing the "other"
