Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on European movies from the 1970s and 1980s that expose sexuality in a radical way. By means of film analysis informed by cultural studies we will flesh out the gendering of the plots and of aesthetics as such.
The representations of taboos in these artefacts help to analyse the complexe interactions between facts and fictions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active Participation; written literature research and scene analysis during the course; presentation; paper of 20 pages by Feb., 20.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students learn to assess the efficacy of aesthetic media in imparting gender knowledge. They will be enabled to avoid a mimetic reading of gendered representations in movies and develop a more sophisticated perception for the specific qualities of media and thereby link cultural artefacts to theoretic positions in Gender Studies.

Examination topics

Introduction in film analysis, feminist film studies and relevant segments of European film history.
Presentations by students with peer feedback, discussions.
PPP, literature on moodle
