Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is a brief course to introduce students to some of the
social-cultural issues in the concept of addiction. It is not so much
interested in social-cultural pathways into or out of addiction and
recovery (although some of this data is examined) but in terms of
situating both addict and addiction as a category as objects of both
anxiety and intervention. The readings include a recent ethnography
focusing on heroin addiction as well as several articles by various
scholars examining some aspect of this category. Students will have
access to (most of) the readings beforehand and will be expected to come
prepared to discuss specific selection in class.
