This seminar aims to highlight the causes and impact of migration and flight from war-torn areas of the Greater Middle East (in particular from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan). In addition, it will focus on refugees from these regions now living in Austria. The seminar will provide basic background information to prepare the field research practice course scheduled for the spring term 2017 in Austria.
Students aiming to participate in this field research seminar are therefore requested to actively participate in the seminar.Methodological approach
Based on ethnographic studies the complex living conditions of forced migrants within their country of original and dispersed throughout the world will be studied. While the main focus will be on ethnographies and documentaries (e.g. reports on refugees and asylum seekers) other sources (e.g. blogs, stories by refugees etc.) will also be analyzed, thus allowing students to practice the use of ethnographies as sources for further investigations. Next to inputs by the instructor students will prepare presentations on specific topics.English will be used as means of communication
