Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on various forms of mobility. Mobility whether voluntary or forced will be examined as a survival strategy. In addition, referring to ethnographic studies and other materials the extent to which migration affected and affects the social and cultural landscape of Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora will be analysis. This includes the study of patterns of migration, the reasons for migration, forms of social organization, means of communication etc., relations within the Afghan diaspora, transformation of world views, gender roles etc.
Using the various forms of migrations and reasons for migration as a case study theoretical reflections on terms like migrant, refugee, voluntary or forced migration will be discussed. In order to get a better understanding of the current debate in forced migration studies several key texts, e.g. by MONSUTTI, FIDDIAN-QASEMIYEH, ZETTER, CASTLES etc. will be discussed in class.
Students will be requested to read a number of obligatory key texts, prepare summaries and discuss these texts in classroom. Next to that students will also be required to prepare a short presentation of a specific topic related to Afghan migrations. This topic together with inputs from the obligatory readings will also be the content of students´ final course papers.
This course will use different approaches: inputs by the lecturer, collective reading and discussion of key texts and other materials (e.g. videos). Students will be required to prepare short presentations on specific topics.

English will be used as means of communication

Assessment and permitted materials

* attendance in 80% of all courses (up to 3 units à 2 hours may be missed)
* active participation in course discussions, presentations etc.
* preparation of brief summaries of obligatory reading material (approx. 500 words each, English or German)
* on time submission of summaries of obligatory reading material (for specific dates of submission see extra handout to be distributed in the first session)
* preparation of handout of student´s own presentation (1 to 2 pages)
* circulation of handout of own presentation to all course participants including instructor; handout has to be sent 48 hours before the respective presentation
* submission of written paper via the KSA Info-Center only
Paper either in English or German - should cover approx. 4000 words without bibliography (in 12 fonds, one spaced)
Word count has to be written on front page of paper.
Papers that are substantially longer than the 4000 word will not be accepted
Final deadline for paper submission will be February 28th, 2021.
No extension will be granted!!!!

Sehr gut 100 % to 91 % of possible points
Gut 90 % to 76 % of possible points
Befriedigend 75 % to 61 % of possible points
Genügend 60 % to 51 % of possible points
Nicht genügend 50 % of possible points
