Participation at first session is obligatory!

The lecturer can invite students to a grade-relevant discussion about partial achievements. Partial achievements that are obtained by fraud or plagiarized result in the non-evaluation of the course (entry 'X' in certificate). The plagiarism software 'Turnitin' will be used for courses with continuous assessment.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the seminar is to prepare the students for a field trip to Indonesia during the summer term 2023. It will be planned and realised in collaboration with the Department of Anthropology at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Java.
The field trip will provide the students with first-hand experience of urban and rural life in central Java. They will have the opportunity to work with NGOs and community-based organisations and undertake ethnographic fieldwork in these settings. The research will be carried out in small groups and as collaborative projects of students of the University of Vienna and Gadjah Mada University.
Total duration of field trip: 4 weeks (preliminary dates: 17 April until 14 May 2023)
In the preparatory course during the winter term 2022, the students will be introduced to the history, cultures and anthropology of Indonesia with a special focus on Java. We will further get an insight into the organisation of civil society in different social contexts and with different agendas. Many of these organisations have a long history and support either specific interest groups (e.g. farmers or fishermen, or women’s associations) or work for a common goal (e.g. recycling plastic waste, cultural activities and tourism). Due to their wide-spread presence and influence, they regulate political, economic, social and cultural life, especially in rural communities and neighbourhood areas in the cities.
The preparatory course will be carried out as a hybrid course which will give the students from Gadjah Mada University the possibility to attend online. This way students from both Universities will be able to meet online and work together during the winter term 2022 already, discuss the various topics and issues raised during the course, reflect upon their research plans, develop research questions and methods etc.
The students are expected to enjoy working in a team and in a multicultural environment. Social skills in communication and collaboration as well as flexibility and adaptability to new and sometimes challenging situations are required.
This seminar is only open to students who intend to participate in the field trip during the summer term 2023. For those students, however, the successful completion of the preparatory course is a requirement for being accepted to join the field trip!
Students who have not yet acquired basic knowledge of the Indonesian language are strongly advised to attend the language course offered at our Department. Details will be announced later in the month of September.
