Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The main aim of the course is to provide students with on opportunity to conduct short-term fieldwork in Alaska. Thus, the main activity of this course will be fieldwork in Alaska, which will take place in May 2025. The meetings before departure will be devoted to organizational and preparatory matters. While the main logistical support, fieldwork itinerary and coordination will be provided by the instructors of the field school, course participants will take care of their individual arrangements. During the preparatory phase, students will develop their fieldwork topics and plans, and will coordinate their activities in small groups in class. For that purpose, they will conduct pre-fieldwork research, including a review of regionally focused literature and media, compiling a contact list of relevant organizations and potential interlocutors, the development of interview questions, etc. The meetings after returning from Alaska will be dedicated to a compilation and first analysis of data collected in Alaska.
Assessment and permitted materials
The first 25% of the grade will be awarded for preparatory activities (before May) needed for a successful field school. Active participation in fieldwork activities and accompanying discussions during the field school will count for 25% of the grade. The final assignment (after our return to Vienna) will be a short popular science essay or blogpost, summarizing the experiences and preliminary results of the field school. It will count for 50% of the grade.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In order to receive a passing grade, you need at least 60 points. A 'sehr gut' requires at least 90 out of 100 points (a 'gut' at least 80 points, etc.). Attendance is required throughout the semester. The parts of the course held in Vienna will have seminar character. The Alaska parts will be characterized by supervised data collection and discussion.
Examination topics
There will be no exams.
