Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The so-called "South Seas cliché", which is still used today, at least in the tourism industry, to arouse longings and turn cherished associations into money, is an example of how stereotypes and clichés are dealt with. The emergence of such clichés has a lot to do with projections, prejudices, wishful thinking, appropriation, economic constraints and various forms of instrumentalization. The tense relationship between "us" and "them" can be critically questioned here against the background of xenophobic tendencies, but also the power of the media and the associated fashion trends can be understood. At the end of the lecture, the participants should be able to decipher other forms of problematic attributions and the intentions behind them, on the basis of the example discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in a one-hour written examination, during which four questions must be asked and all four must be answered.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The evaluation is based on a point system: 16 points are awarded. 0-8 points = insufficient; 9-10 points = sufficient; 11-12 points = satisfactory; 13-14 points = good; 15-16 points = very good.
