Lehrziel: Course content:

By collective reading and discussing selected studies relevant for the issue students should get acquainted to apply theoretical concepts when working on empirical material.

Lehrinhalt und Methode/ methodological approach
Using key texts by GELLNER, TAPPER, SALZMANN and BARFIELD on the relationship between tribes and states as a baseline selected case studies will be analysed. Students will be requested to read a number of obligatory key texts, prepare summaries and discuss these texts in classroom. Next to that students will also be required to prepare a short presentation of their individual paper topic in classroom (e.g. the relation between the Pashtun tribes and the Afghan state, or e.g. the Bakhtiari and the Iranian State under the Pahlavis). In this presentation as well as in the written version of the later notions of the obligatory reading material have to be integrated.

English will be used as means of communication
