Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the seminar is to prepare the students for the field trip to Indonesia during the summer term 2017.
The research in Indonesia will focus on the development of the city of Surabaya in East Java which has been awarded as one of the country’s most successful ‘Smart Cities’ by the Indonesian government. The field trip will be planned and realised in cooperation with the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Surabaya. Students of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna and the Department of Architecture of the ITS will study, in small groups, local development strategies and initiatives that have affected local governments, economies, environments and cultural projects in different urban quarters (kampung). It is expected that both groups of students will benefit from this collaborative project by establishing new contacts, broadening their understanding of different modes of teaching and learning and experiencing the advantages and challenges of interdisciplinary research. During approx. one week, the students from Vienna will be accommodated in Indonesian households. This will give them the opportunity to experience everyday life in a kampung and to build close relationships with the local people. Total duration of field trip: 3 weeks. Dates: probably from 18 March until 9 April 2017.
The preparatory course during the winter term 2016 will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to the geography, anthropology and ethnography of Indonesia with special focus on East Java
- Theoretical and ethnographic approaches to urban anthropology, smart city concepts and the anthropology of development
- Ethnographic research methods
The research questions, concepts and ethnographic methods that should be applied during the field work in Indonesia, will be developed and practised in a collaborative fashion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Attendance of 80% of course units (max. of 5 units may be missed)
- Ability to work independently and proactively
- Timely and thorough preparation of homework
- Presentation of short papers in class
-Submission of a written seminar paper of approx. 5000 words at the end of the course (digital version via Moodle and hard copy handed in at the Info-Center)

This seminar is only open to students who intend to participate in the field trip during the summer term 2017. For those students, however, the successful completion of the preparatory course is a requirement for being accepted to join the field trip!

Mandatory reading materials will be provided via Moodle or the 'Handapparat' at the KSA library. Further recommended reading will be announced in the course.
