Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Prerequisite for a positive grade is a successful short presentation with the presentation, reflection and interpretation of an image/picture, as well as the written elaboration and processing of this image/picture, whereby both a theoretical embedding and reference to methodological approaches must be mentioned.
The evaluation is based on a point system: 16 points are awarded. 0-8 points = insufficient; 9-10 points = sufficient; 11-12 points = satisfactory; 13-14 points = good; 15-16 points = very good.

The focus is on the significance of image research and image analysis in the cultural and social sciences. There are also various branches within visual anthropology that deal with different aspects of the subject. Based on the historical development of image research in our discipline (which in part differs significantly from that in art history), the significance for the present and in particular the popular cultural dimension of image research are placed at the centre of the seminar. The aim is for students to have a different, more critical and differentiated view of images at the end of the seminar than before. The central image theories will be discussed as well as the power of images, the associated interpretative sovereignty and what images can (and should) trigger. Furthermore, the importance of image research for dealing with current issues will be highlighted.
